This chapter reviews the history of contact lenses, with a focus on silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses, which are materials comprising amphiphilic polymer co-networks (APCN). The original clinical requirements, the technological challenges that needed to be overcome and the benefits from the availability of these materials in the market will be described. A brief outlook at the frontier of contact lens technology will also be provided at the end of the chapter.
