An important development of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) in analytical science is its implementation to visualize the electroanalysis process at electrode surfaces. When compared with other optical bioassays, ECL imaging does not require any optical excitation that avoids background signal from the illumination. Accordingly, ECL imaging has the advantages of enhanced spatio-temporal resolutions and high detection sensitivity, and thus, is applied in high throughput bioanalysis and to visualize the distribution of molecules at single cells. This chapter summarizes many important developments in this field, including electrode design and applications in bioanalysis.
