Today, crude oil’s price volatility together with growing energetic demand have become some of the major concerns of governments around the world. In fact, total daily oil consumption reached 100 million oil barrels worldwide at the end of 2018 and is expected to grow in 2019.1 The future collapse of fossil fuels and global climate change related to greenhouse gas emissions have motivated the intensification of research efforts to develop more clean and environmentally friendly energetic alternatives.2 Liquid transportation fuels represent the most high-demand energetic source due to their crucial importance in the transportation sector. To this end, the European Union (EU) has set an ambitious plan for the utilization of biofuels through the EU Biofuels Directive 2009/28/EC.3 According to this Directive, the European Renewable Energy Council expects that, by the end of 2040, the contribution of renewable sources to energy production will be increased by almost 50%.4–6
