Successful utilisation of a phase change material (PCM) depends on the design of a storage device which provides not only the containment of the PCM but also means for charging and discharging through, for example, heat transfer fluid (HTF). A typical PCM based latent heat storage device is often made of various components, and it can only function when it is integrated into a system. A good design of such a device requires the knowledge of not only the PCM properties but also the heat transfer and exchange especially the melting and solidification processes. In this chapter, heat transfer analyses on the charging and discharging processes in PCM-based heat storage devices are described; the design principles of different devices are presented; and an attempt is made to understand the linkage of the materials properties to device performance enhancement.
