In Ayurveda system of medicine, the root of Murva (Accepted source: Marsdenia tenacissima (Roxb.) Moon (Asclepiadaceae)) forms a vital component in various formulations like Ayaskrti, Brahanmanjistadi kvatha curna, etc. These formulations are indicated in the treatment of apasmara (epilepsy), hrdroga (cardiac disorders), mutra dosa (urinary disorders), kustha (skin diseases), pandu (anaemia), jvara (fever), netra roga (eye diseases) and gulma (abdominal disorders). But, there are several other plant species used in the name of Murva across the country and two such species are Sansevieria roxburghiana Schult. & Schult. f. (Agavaceae) and Bauhinia vahlii Wt. & Arn. (Caesalpiniaceae). Hence, in the present study, protective effect of ethanol and aqueous extract of S. roxburghiana rhizome and B. vahlli root was evaluated against Maximal Electrical Shock (MES) and Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced convulsions in experimental animals.
