In recent years, the field of heterogeneous catalysis has undergone an explosive growth. In the drive towards cleaner technologies, heterogeneous catalysts are precious tools for implementing green chemistry. The aim of this chapter is to provide an introduction to heterogeneous catalysis, with a brief overview of its historical development and its basic concepts, highlighting the green benefits of heterogeneous catalysis when applied to organic synthesis. Recent examples of applications of different kinds of heterogeneous catalysts are also described.
