The excess Gibbs energy function, together with the subsequently defined activity coefficient, permit the mathematical description of solutions in chemical thermodynamics and is widely used to describe systems in phase equilibria. They allow the efficient and effective design of chemical separation processes using simulation platforms. This chapter provides a synopsis of the activity coefficient concept and presents some of the most popular and widely applicable models that are used for both correlation and prediction of the activity coefficient.
