This chapter discusses containment strategies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases within different societies and cultures. Quarantine and isolation are complex, controversial, and coercive public health strategies and should be used only after carefully analyzing the benefits and harm to the public. Since coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a global pandemic, the response strategies of governments have been dependent on societal compliance. As behavior is based on culture, societies in different regions responded to the same challenge differently.
