Starting with some essential elements from modern learning theory this chapter seeks to justify the use of cooperative learning approaches for teaching chemistry students in higher education. The basic principles of cooperative learning are described, their applications in theoretical and practical courses are discussed and the approach is illustrated using a number of examples taken from higher level chemistry courses. The chapter concludes by considering the potential of computer technology to support cooperative learning environments.
