Assessment represents a significant part of the workload of the teacher and much student activity (and concern) is motivated by assessment. There are good reasons for having assessment but the assessment is not always designed to promote effective learning. This chapter hinges on the essential mapping of learning outcomes and assessment and offers a critical view of the strengths and limitations of a range of assessment methods. Different modes of assessment can measure different attributes and it is important to take this into account when combining scores or grades.
