In this chapter we will consider what basic functions a CDS can perform. Then, we will look at the evolution of CDS from 1970 to the present day and finally consider what additional functions should be present to enable more efficient and effective chromatographic operations in the future. Throughout all of these areas the increased requirement for data integrity will be apparent.
