This chapter provides the general order of seniority for compound classes, including classes expressed by characteristic group suffixes and classes denoted only by the senior atom of heterane nomenclature. It includes a comprehensive list of acids ordered by seniority, a list of functional replacement infixes or prefixes ordered by seniority, a list of carboxylic and sulfonic acid functional replacement infix names in order of seniority, and a complete list of suffixes and functional replacement analogues also in order of seniority. Criteria for selection of a preferred parent structure and criteria for selection of the preferred name from several unambiguous names that can be based on the same preferred parent structure are described and amply illustrated. Criteria for determining the principal chain in compound substituent groups are listed and illustrated.
