We discuss dispersion (van der Waals) interactions in low-dimensional systems. Two-dimensional systems include monolayers such as graphene and MoS2, and layered solids such as graphite and hexagonal boron nitride. One-dimensional systems include nanotubes, nano-wires, and some polymers. Low-dimensional systems exhibit unusual dispersion forces, especially when they have a small or zero electronic energy gap, as in metallic nanotubes for example.
