Visualising molecules in 3D is hard. Fortunately, chemists use quite a few of the important stereochemical concepts and terms to describe the shapes of more 2D molecules, like alkenes. So, even if you really came to this book to learn about chirality and conformations in molecules with sp3 carbon atoms, we suggest you venture first into the sp2 world of alkenes. You can build your confidence in describing groups as cis and trans to each other, following the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog (CIP) rules and using NMR spectroscopy to observe stereochemical features. In short, Chapter 2 is a great place to start your exploration of stereochemistry.
