The ‘Journey’ is one of the great themes of literature. It is said that a journey of exploration starts from the known and travels to the unknown, whereas a journey in science goes from the unknown to the known. My own journey has been an adventure in the exploration of science. This book is dedicated to my grandchildren: Jude, Toby, Tom and Emily. Whatever their chosen careers, I hope that their journeys through life are also good adventures.
