Optical properties of materials are intimately related to their electronic structure. This chapter begins with an overview of the general concepts of optical reflectance, absorption, and scattering. Discussions of diverse phenomena such as photoconduction, luminescence and lasing, and photvoltaic and photoelectrochemical effects follow. Finally, a brief introduction to some of the basic principles of nonlinear optics is provided.
