Organic compounds are composed of mostly two parts, the non-reactive part of largely the hydrocarbon region, and the more reactive part with polar bonds that we call the functional groups. In this chapter, the various functional groups (e.g. alcohols, carboxylic acids, ketones, aldehydes, amines, and alkyl halides), their nomenclature, occurrence, physical and chemical properties and types of common reactions are discussed.
