He stayed on at Strathclyde, carrying out drug discovery research, and obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Science. After several years in teaching and post-doctoral research at the Strathclyde Institute for Drug Research and University of Strathclyde, he joined the School of Science, University of Greenwich, in September 1998, since when he has been a leader of taught programmes and research on bioassays and natural products-based drug development. As a Director of Herbal Analysis Services UK, which he established to serve as a global collaboration forum for research, Dr Habtemariam has published more than 250 scientific publications and filed over three families of patents. He is the author of a book entitled The African and Arabian Moringa Species: Chemistry Bioactivity and Therapeutic Applications. His most comprehensive self-authored books also include Medicinal Foods as Potential Therapies for Type-2 Diabetes and Associated Diseases: The Chemical and Pharmacological Basis of Their Action. Details of his research activities and publications are available via the website http://www.herbalanalysis.co.uk. With a distinguished pharmacological and analytical/medicinal chemistry background, Dr Habtemariam has decades of experience in teaching life science students (pharmaceutical, biological, forensic, biomedical, etc.) various topics including basic organic chemistry, instrumental/analytical methods, and pharmacology.
