It was the arrival of Holland Crompton at Bedford College, London, in 1888, which marked the start of chemistry degrees there. Though plagued by debilitating ill-health, during his 40 years at the college, he hired a series of women chemistry students as researchers. The women who had joint publications with Crompton were: Martha Whiteley, Eva Cyriax, Muriel Harrison, Maggie Walker, Mina Smyth, Paula Vanderstichele, Phyllis Triffitt, and Kate Carter. In addition, Phyllis McKie undertook research while she was a Demonstrator with Crompton.
