Rocket propellants require special devices for their ignition or start of combustion process. This chapter discusses various igniter configurations and the igniter compositions used for the initiation of rocket propellants. From conventional gun powder, ignition systems for solid rocket propellants have undergone major changes and metals (boron, magnesium) with oxidizers (nitrates) are being used in modern rocketry for the ignition of solid propellants. This chapter discusses the different ignition systems used for rockets, along with their mechanism of action.
