Magnetic nanoceramics, mainly the iron oxides magnetite and maghemite, have demonstrated excellent biocompatibility with living tissues. These oxides prepared as nanoparticles are currently applied or undergoing clinical study as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging, hyperthermia treatment of cancer, gene transfection and drug delivery systems. Due to their unique magnetic properties and capability to be functionalized, magnetic nanoceramics are called upon to play a very important role in the next generation of nanodevices in the field of therapy and diagnosis. Chapter 7 deals with the properties of magnetite and maghemite nanoparticles, the most significant synthesis method and reviews the main clinical applications of these nanosystems.
