Research in mesoporous materials is highly popular; the field encompasses many interesting works in chemical synthesis which, in turn, are responsible for novel and practical applications with clear impact on our society. From the first descriptions of mesoporous solids, the field now includes a myriad new materials used in very different scenarios, from catalysis to medical and nanotechnological applications. It is possible to pinpoint two key milestones in this route of discovery, i.e. the incorporation of structure-directing agents to the synthesis of porous silica and the application of high-resolution electron microscopy and electron crystallography to the study of these materials. Chapter 5 deals with the main concepts to understand the preparation and characterization of mesoporous materials.
