The properties of transition metal complexes inspire their exploration as motifs to design macromolecules. Particularly, their photoactivity, redox-activity, magnetic properties and coordination chemistry permit the design of attractive functional macromolecules with implications for catalysis, photovoltaics, sensing, bioimaging, carbon dioxide capture and solar energy harvesting. Here we discuss, with illustrated examples, the photoactivity, redox-activity, magnetic properties and coordination chemistry of transition metal complexes.
