Solutes that possess a CO2-switchable functional group can have their properties reversibly changed in situ by the addition or removal of CO2. The solute properties that can be controlled include reactivity, colour, fluorescence, solubility, or partitioning between immiscible phases. Potential applications include catalyst recovery, improvement of catalytic selectivity, synthesis of block copolymers, CO2-sensing, and recovery of carboxylic acids from fermentation broths.
