Planned maintenance is always better than unplanned troubleshooting, which will take longer and may result in samples needing to be re-analysed as the instrument performance was not good enough. Proper maintenance schedules result in less instrument down time overall, higher sample throughput and better analysis results. In this chapter, we will review sections of the GC-MS which require regular preventative maintenance.
