Here we look at the origins of chewing gum in a tree used by the ancient Maya, and the modern synthetic gum bases that are supplanting it, before moving on to other molecules including rubber and menthol, introducing the concept of chirality on the way. We then return to trees with the Pacific yew, a source of the compound which led to the anti-cancer drug Paclitaxel.
