Of all the components of a data integrity and data governance programme within any organisation, establishing and maintaining an open culture is the most difficult. First and foremost, this requires leadership from senior management to disseminate the open culture message throughout the organisation along with setting up the on-going communication and management effort to maintain it. The essential elements of an open culture are honesty, a willingness to admit mistakes and a no-blame approach by the organisation. However, in some regions of the world, an open culture may be difficult to achieve due to local customs and social behaviour, resulting in situations where it is difficult to admit mistakes or question management.
