The toxicity – or any other biological activity – of a chemical is triggered by a direct action of some kind at a molecular level but what the observed harmful outcome is, if any, depends on a chain of events from the molecular level to the cell, the organ containing it, and the whole organism. To be fully-effective, a prediction model needs to take into account the whole chain of events – the adverse outcome pathway.
