The fifth chapter of the book features the enantioselective cobalt-catalysed reduction reactions of acyclic compounds, such as carbonyl compounds and alkenes. The first section deals with the reduction of carbonyl compounds, including borohydride reductions, hydrogenations and hydrosilylations, while the second section concerns the reduction of alkenes through borohydride conjugate reductions, hydroborations, hydrosilylations, and hydrogenations. The uniformly excellent enantioselectivities obtained for all of these transformations well reflects the wide possibilities of the use of chiral cobalt complexes of various types to promote all types of reactions.
