This chapter introduces the concept of tissue engineering, and notes the use of specific types of material for construction of the necessary scaffolds. Three current areas where tissue engineering is applied are described, namely the provision of engineered skin, articular cartilage and bone. Other areas are mentioned, but the chapter emphasizes these three, and gives a very brief account of each of them.
