The basic structure of perfume compositions is described using well known modern perfumes. When compared with the modern structural framework of a perfume, some very interesting differences emerge between today's perfumes and those of Biblical times. Close links between perfumery and pharmacy have existed throughout history. In the ancient world, the two industries were almost indistinguishable. In today's world, the science behind the two is still strongly related, both in terms of chemical research methods and in the way in which our vastly improved understanding of physiological chemistry and molecular biology have contributed to both industries.
