Extracting odorous chemicals from plant sources requires practical skills and relevant technology. Most of the methods used nowadays, and certainly the commonest modern techniques, were not available in Biblical times. The differences are explained in this chapter, and this leads on to show the differences in the physical forms that were available for Biblical perfumes and contrasts these with those we know today. Storage of perfumes is also an important part of perfume technology and, as with methods of extraction, there is a contrast between the technology of Biblical times and that of today.
