Two perfume formulae are disclosed in the Hebrew Bible and these are discussed in this chapter. These two perfumes were restricted to sacred use, and many other references can be found regarding the use of perfume in worship. However, there are also many accounts of how perfume was used in day to day life in Biblical times and these reflect, to a considerable degree, the uses to which perfume is put today, for both personal and household use. Accounts of perfume being used for courtship and seduction are retold in this chapter, the outcome of the two events being in stark contrast with each other.
