It has been stipulated that defining physiology based on function is teleologic, raising the question as to how to define it? Viewing physiology from a functional perspective distracts from the evolutionary origin of such properties that refer back to the First Principles of Physiology. Cellular-molecular studies of physiology across ontogeny and phylogeny disclose a much richer and insightful analysis of every facet of our living experience than can be derived through purely functional analysis.
