In his famous lecture, “The Two Cultures,” C.P. Snow expressed his dismay at the schism between science and the arts. In reality, the ancient Greeks knew as much about the nature of existence as we do today, indicating that we are making a systematic error in trying to understand the “how and why” of life. The cellular approach to evolutionary biology has offered a novel perspective on the history of life, which is intimately related to our self-image, which “colors” our way of thinking about the nature of life. Both science and art represent ways in which we experiment in order to transition between Bohm's Explicate to Implicate Order.
