James Lovelock expressed the idea that the Earth is an organic whole in his groundbreaking book, Gaia Theory. The Gaia concept has never been robustly considered through a focus on cellular faculties and how they originated. Niche construction promotes evolution by creating conditions for integrated epigenetic cellular interactions. This same internalization process reiterates to the planetary level, or Gaia.
