Addition of halides can dramatically increase the range of properties available in glasses. Very high electrical conductivities can be obtained in a large number of systems, which can be useful for devices requiring high ionic mobility. Addition of halides can produce glasses with lower refractive indices than most oxide glasses for optical applications. Halides also lower the temperatures required to produce good quality glasses.
