Potential scheme explaining the energetic conditions for oxygen evolution in photosynthesis (at neutral pH). Photoexcitation in the reaction centre leads to a stepwise oxidation of the Mn4O5Ca-complex, which then induces oxygen evolution at an estimated current density of 12 mA cm−2 with only 60 mV overpotential losses.
